Closing 2012

There's no doubt that 2012 has been a tough year for everyone, there's huge amount of uncertainty at every turn.

But, the world goes on and we all need to make sure our little corner of the world is ticking away as best as possible.

Although this year has been tough, we're always looking to improve and tweak our business to make our offer better for our customers.

2012 has brought us a whole lot of new bag options we have available from stock, we're upgraded our warehouse facilities to allow up to hold up to 225,000 bags in our Australian warehouse + another 300,000 bag in our UK operation.

We've improved our stock holding to accommodate the marked increase in demand for bags made from natural fibres such as Cotton, Canvas and Jute.

Australian Made has also been an important addition.  While these products only make up a small percentage of sales - it's becoming more important to be able to offer a competitive product (both price and quality).

Planet Eco Bags has been another addition to the business.  This is the retail arm for our products and allows online purchases of a couple bags which can be delivered within a week or so.  It's just another small way we can offer our quality products to a wider base of consumers.

Facebook and Twitter have formed part of our presence this year.  As with everything we do they just small steps, but little by little we're making gains.

Lastly, our core philosophy will always remain unchanged - we never aim to be the first, but we do aim to be the best - our list of Happy Customers can let you know that.

Thanks for reading and we'll see you in 2013.

We NEED to Reduce Plastic Waste

There are some extremely alarming things going on in the world at the moment.  There's the very visible, immediate & high profile trouble of racial conflict, war, poverty & famine.

Also happening are some much quieter things where the victims cannot speak for themselves.

Check out the sheer volume of plastic found in this bird.  The image is from Australia's ABC 7:30 Report.

Simple Business

The bag business is not complicated, but there are some people that make it really really difficult.

Our business has & will always live by 3 simple philosophies :

1) keep customers happy; our track record stands this test - our customers keep coming back.
check out the comments from our Happy Customers

2) supply quality products at great value. We’re usually not the cheapest, because we only sell good quality product.
quality is a little bit more expensive & we are the 1st to admit that, but a little extra care does not cost the earth.

3) always treat your partners (both customers and suppliers) fairly.
Bag People's Corporate Responsibility pages will let you know how we work with our partners.

It's all simple stuff & it's not hard to get right... but some companies continually do.

Contract Us to see what our business can do for you.

The Message for your Business

What are your bags saying about your business?

My words - I've seen some shockers... there are terrible bags out there.  But it does not need to be that way.

No matter what budget you've got or what fabric your working with, there are simple ways to make a Reusable Bag look good & work for your business, not against it.

A simple Non-woven Bag can be an absolute gem.

Here's one we made for WA News - just a plain old black bag.

But the print is amazing & really makes the bag work.  There is no doubt this is a bag that will stand out in people's minds as a great bag for the purpose.

Just a plain old Canvas Bag right... wrong.

Get something special going for the print & once again, the bag really starts to sing.

It's not difficult, it just takes a little bit of thought.

Have a thing about what we can do for your bags.

No need to make them ordinary - when they can be extraordinary.

Keep it Contemporary

We said it before & we'll say it again.

Low Cost Reusable Bags DO NOT automatically mean low quality or ugly.

The formula is really really simple :

STEP ONE  ::  spend 1 more hour thinking about the print/design
STEP TWO  ::  spend about 5% extra for the quality

RESULT  ::  a great looking bag the people want to carry

Because we do nothing but bags, you should Contact Us for STEP ONE.

We can offer some potentially valuable insight in to what works - we've done it literally thousands of times before.

Fairtrade is more than just better Pay

The Fairtrade movement started life from the vision that developed countries needed to be more responsible for their actions towards developing countries.

The ethos is simple - but very difficult to bring in to reality.

Some of the top priorities were to give primary produces better compensation for their products (basically paying more for the same products).

This simple movement has taken giant steps since inception & now were finding that Fairtrade is accessing all kinds other benefits for developing countries.

It's not just about more money, it's about better standards of living, better pathways for development, better business practises (which means equality rather than being bullied).

Now we're finding that the Fairtrade movement is actually cracking down on child labour.

In a recent post they mentioned they've started exploring the staffing methods for Sporting Balls.

Balls are a far cry from bags, but the thrust is the same.

Bag People been monitoring child labour within out factories for 12 years & being part of Fairtrade this monitoring becomes a necessity to be involved in the Fairtrade program.

Have you checked your suppliers lately?

More and More Jute

Reusable bags made from Jute have been in Europe & the UK for many years.

Now they're starting to gain momentum in Australia & New Zealand.

We're finding more & more of our customers are drawn to the benefits of Jute.

1)  Jute fibres are 100% Bio-degradable.  Put then in the ground & they're turned back to soil in a matter of weeks.

2)  Jute plants grow extraordinarily fast.  Plants can reach maturity for harvest in a few months.

3)  No herbicides or pesticides are used for farming.  Somehow Jute manages to protect itself without any outside assistance from chemicals.

4)  Jute Bags are extremely strong & durable for all manner of uses.  Shopping is the primary use, but there are plenty of others.

What else do you need to know about Jute?

The Unforgettable Bag

... well, there's always a chance you'll forget  :-)

But, a Stuff Bag from Bag People will shorten the odds quite a bit.

It's a great little bag that's made from light-weight polyester & folds up in to a little pouch all to itself.

Never loose the pouch because it's actually part of the bag (sewn in to the top seam).

Once they're back in the Pouch - easy store in your handbag, glove box or that little shifty area in the drivers door.

Perfect.

What size is your footprint?

There is no doubt that human beings have an impact on the Earth.  That fact is undeniable.

The level of that impact varies greatly & there's continual debate on the topic.

But, no matter what you think or how you act - you are having an impact on the Earth.

So, the question is "what is my personal level of impact?"

Can you repair or reuse a something as opposed to throwing it out & buying a new one?

Can you walk instead of using the car?

Can you refill that water bottle?  Can you use an air-tight container to store your food rather than a single-use plate?

At work, can you read something on screen rather than printing it.

Do you turn out the lights?

Then... what about your suppliers; what are their thoughts & processes?

How do they work & how do they operate?

Here's how we work  ::  Corporate Responsibility

Make sure you ask your other suppliers the same question.

What is a great Product?

A great product goes beyond the quality, goes beyond delivery & certainly goes beyond price.

A great product gives you that feeling that you've done something good.  It's leave you with the feeling that everyone in the transaction has done well & gotten their fair share.

At Bag People our aim to to ensure that everyone wins.

Our customers win because they've received a great quality product at a reasonable price which was delivered when promised.

Our suppliers win because they have been paid a fair & equitable amount for the products & services they've produced.

We win because we get paid on time by happy customers that are raving about our service, responsiveness & ability to communicate - then deliver.

Think back to a time when you've had a great product/service experience.

Did the feeling last just during the transaction, or was is lasting throughout the lifetime of that product; every time you used it (or thought about it) it made you feel good again.

More importantly - how did you relate your experience to other people?  I'm sure it was quite enthusiastic.

At Bag People we aim to have happy customers that will speak highly of us & our business.

Everyone Needs Help

Company Policies & Mission Statements will tell you what we do & how we go about it.

But, the WHY is the biggest driving factor.

Of course, we want to make our own situation better - that of ourselves, our family & friends.

We also want to help better the lives of those far less fortunate than us.

At Bag People we believe there's always room for 10%, that's why we give back to the community by supporting our selected charities :

World Vision. We help them to make the difference in the developing world. World Vision delivers education, health care & infrastructure to those how need it most.

The Smith Family "Learning for Life". Assisting young people from under-privileged families & communities with their schooling, basic education & life skills. The formative years for young people are difficult enough without the added burdens of financial pressure that limits access to education & sometimes reasonable nutrition. Learning for Life brings some stability to those who need it most.

We hope that giving to these 2 causes will give optimism, confidence, faith & trust to that that need it most.

What Bag to Choose

When you're thinking about bags for your business or event there are a couple of factors you should keep in mind :

1) Single-use or Reusable?
Have a think about the emphasis you'd like to re-enforce with your bags, do you want people to think that it is an environmentally friendly option... or something else?

2) Advertising Space or Subtle Branding?
In all our years of manufacturing promotional bags we have found that people feel good about using a reusable bag.  BUT, they don't want to be carrying a "walking billboard" for your business - the only reason they'll do that is if you've got a premium brand.  If not (like most of us) you'll need to be more discrete with your branding.  Try to get a mix of nice looking & impactful yet nicely understated & not too much "in your face".

3) Price vs. Value
There's a big difference between price/cost & value.  In studies of consumer buying behaviour it has been discovered that the primary indicator of quality is price.  This means you should be careful if you put a price on your bags.

4) Fabric Options
Bag People have a number of fabric options available - each option has a target price-point with an under lying mixed of functionality.  When choosing your fabric option have a think about what it will be saying about your business & brand positioning.

5) Functionality
There are an almost endless number of design options for your bags.  When thinking about what style of bag to use, you should think about how your intended users will be using their bags - are they Uni Students, kids, the elderly... it is a 'show bag' or shopping bag... will there be heaps of weight to carry?

6) Delivery Time
The basic hard & fast need of supply... when it your event?  Is there a tight dead-line or is there plenty of time.

7) Cost
Finally, there's the very simple question of "how much will it cost?"  It's a very real factor that every business ness to address.

A quick chat with Bag People will help make you decision easier.

We'll also send out samples so you can make educated decisions about which way to go.

Be the First or Be the Best

In the Technology Sector there are 2 descriptions to be mindful of :

Bleeding Edge -- this is the extreme forefront of the latest development.  Very high risk / reward possibilities.  If things go well, everyone wins : investors & consumers... but if it goes badly, there there are plenty of broken dreams & lots of lost money.

Leading Edge -- these area is occupied by companies that get on board with technology & ideas that is still proving itself & there is still a wide opportunity to shape the basics, but the absolute outcome is not clear.

No matter what sector you're involved in there are always new developments to be mindful of.

When new things come around you can make the decision to get on board early or wait a little while.

At Bag People we tend to wait a little while; not too long, but we wait & see what's going to happen.

Although there are not a great deal of technological product developments in bags - there are a number of new things occurring all the time.

There are better methods of recycling, more efficient operation of machinery, faster & more effective delivery methods, plus advancements in the way producers & manufacturers are treated (see the Fairtrade movement is a good example here).

By waiting we can see what benefits there might be & how it may effect our business & therefore our customer.

Then, after we've selected our path - we put plenty of resources behind it to give it the best possible chance of success.

The end result, our business benefits & we have plenty of Happy Customers.

Fairtrade Fortnight in Australia

Tomorrow marks the start of Fairtrade Fortnight in Australia :: www.fairtrade.com.au.

So what is Fairtrade?

Well, it's about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability & fair terms of trade for farmers & workers in the developing world.  Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade by requiring companies to pay sustainable prices.  Fairtrade seeks to remove the traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers & it enables them to improve their position & have more control over their lives.

Bag People are a Certified Fairtrade Supplier & we support Fairtrade by offering a Fairtrade Cotton alternative within our bag range.

Jute - our Reusable Future

Jute Bags are fast becoming the path forward in our reusable future.

Although they are bigger & heavier than most of the alternatives.  The small amount of additional fuel for transportation is quickly offset by the vast number of benefits offered in other areas.

Jute is a 100% natural fibre & there's no need for any additional man-made ingredients.

Jute is grown using similar methods to that of organic farming where crops are rotated seasonally & there are no herbicides or pesticides used.

Jute has no need for genetic modification.  It's a very hardy plant that grows to harvestable maturity in 4-6 months.

The whole Jute plant is used.  The inner section is used to create the Jute fibres for making products like bags, twine/rope, paper, shoes, carpet backing.  Then the outer section & leaves are used as firewood.

Harvest is between July & October with the primary growing region in the Bengal area (India & Bangladesh).  There are other regions producing Jute - such as China & Brazil.

Jute is the smart choice for a range of reasons.

Is Fast Good?

In our business - as with almost all businesses - mistakes cost money.

No matter what error has occurred, it's going to cost money (or time... and time is money, so they say).

So how does the relate to bags?

First, there are the time pressures of events, conferences and meetings.  If you miss the date, well... you might as well toss the lot away.

Second is print and brand accuracy.  If you get the printing wrong or the branding is not correct (colour, proportions, position or sizes) the impact could almost certainly cost money or at the very least create some lost presence or perhaps branding confusion.

Third is quality and accuracy of production.  Making sure that the end product will last is of utmost importance. Everyone wants quality and everyone wants a good image.  So it's worth spending a bit more time on getting things right and making sure the materials are of sustainable quality.

Getting these few things right is extremely important in our business because You have entrusted us with your deadlines, brand and quality.

We take the steps to make sure we get it right.

Non-woven - 500 to 1

So what is Non-woven Fabric?

The 1st thing to know is that it's not woven like conventional fabric.

If you look at a sheet of Cotton, you'll see it is knitted or woven together by individually strands of Cotton.

Non-woven fabric is formed in to a sheet by bonding the base material (usually Polypropylene, which is a plastic) together by entangling the fibres together either mechanically, thermally or chemically.

The most common production method for Non-woven fabric is to create a sheet made directly from molten plastic.

Non-woven Polypropylene can contain a percentage of recycled material, but adding recycled material to the molten plastic can reduce strength in the end product, so the percentage of recycled material introduced is determined by the integrity required in the end product.

Bag People include 30% Recycled Content in all our Non-woven Bags.

Non-woven PET can be 100% Recycled.

Unlike other fabric, Non-woven's can be created with the-end-in-mind product & can be constructed for a variety of uses with varying degrees of :

  • liquid absorbency / repellence
  • resilience / flexibility
  • stretch / softness
  • flame retardancy
  • washability
  • cushioning
  • filtering
  • sterility (for bacterial barriers)
The array of customisable properties for Non-woven fabric's can be suited to many specific jobs.

Non-woven fabric has proven to have a good balance balance between product use-life and cost & as such has proven to be a good replacement for single use plastic bags.

A well made Non-woven Supermarket Bag has the capability to eliminate the need for up to 500 single use plastic bags.

While Non-woven fabric is a plastic petrochemical & does have it's shortcomings, they do proved a reasonable alternative to single use plastic bags.  Which can cause more environmental damage - especially to animal life.

There are pro's & con's for both options & you'll need to make your own judgement on which is best for your needs & the needs of the environment.

There's plenty we can all do - we just need to do it.

Swing Towards Natural Fibres

Bag People have been in business since 1993 & we've seen a lot of trends in that time.

In the last 10 years there has been a real swing towards Reusable Bags.  Custom-made & branded bags suitable for all kinds of businesses & needs.

The main push during this time has been Non-woven Polypropylene - the Classic Green Bag that you get from your local Supermarket.

The Reusable Bag trend is still continuing & in the last 2 years has evolved once again toward Natural Fibres, such as Cotton, Canvas, Bamboo & Jute.

Momentum for these fabric options continues to build for a number of factors, but as far as we can tell - there are only 3 main drivers :

1) perception of value - customers view these natural fibres as more luxurious than the same-old same-old Non-woven Bags.

2) biodegradability - people know that plastic takes millions of years to totally decompose - if at all & considering the ever increasing impact humans have on the planet, people are becoming more & more aware of what happens to their waste after it is gone from view.

3) improved consistency of supply - 5 to 7 years ago the supply of natural fibres was very inconsistent, the quality varied wildly & the ability to make a firm promise about delivery was not possible, but over the years, the product quality has improved as has the supply channel to allow us (the suppliers) to be certain (within reason of course) to promise delivery.

Do you want to know more about the consistency & stability of supply?

Be Specific and Save

Being specific with what you need will save a lot of time & money.

If you are specific with your requirements, you'll get what you ask for.

When you're ordering Reusable Bags it is no different.

If you're unsure about what you want to achieve, or not sure about any of the details; then it's going to take a long time to get what you want.

Being specific should not be confused unwillingness to vary your ideas - sometimes suppliers have great ideas that might enhance what you need.  After all, they do work with that product or service everyday, they are the professional & should know something about their field.

When you're considering getting bags, you should have a think about these few things & how they fit with your ideas :
- size (dimensions)
- shape
- colour
- texture

Saving at any Cost

In the current economic environment we all need to watch-every-penny. Everyone is finding ways to keep costs to a minimum aswell as delivering maximum return for every cent.

Overall product quality has been a topic we've mentioned before, but it's worth re-mentioning again.

Price is a major factor in most decisions & sometimes it's easy to become myopic about decision making, but it's worth taking a step back for a moment & looking at what you're trying to achieve.

Have a look at all the factors in the decision & see what will work best for your situation.

Bag People deliver reusable bags of any kind.

These 3 words fill in the sentence of what you'd like to get for your money :
> Good
> Cheap
> Quick

Bag People can make your bags _______ & _______ but not _______.

There are 3 outcomes :
> Good & Quick but not Cheap.
> Cheap & Good but not Quick.
> Quick & Cheap but not Good.

Have a think about what your needs are?

Get More Exposure. Create the Demand.

The easiest way to get more exposure for your business is to get people to do it for you.

Reusable Bags have been around for a long time now... everyone knows them... everyone uses them & everyone has heaps of them.

But every now & again along comes a bag that people want.

This should be your goal.

At Bag People we can help you achieve it.

We use a wide range of fabric options & print capabilities that can help your bag stand out.

Sure, it might cost a little more than the plain-old-boring-Green-Bag, but can you put a price on someone "wanting" to use a bag that has your business name on it?

Contact Us to find out what options are available & how we can help.

You'll be surprised at how little it actually cost to get creative.
