Closing 2011

Hello Everyone,

Well... what a year it's been!  I think everyone deserves a good break & lots of rest with their loved ones.

This year the GFC continued to grip a lot of businesses & although we saw a number of our competitors close their doors we managed to maintain our solid grounding of customers by delivering continually great products & service.

This year we began testing the boundaries of what could be achieved with print technologies.  We created an oil-painting finish on a Canvas Bag.

We continued our commitment to the Fairtrade movement by increasing our stock holding of Fairtrade products in Australia & supporting a variety of Fairtrade events during the year.

Cotton pricing went crazy & has not really restored itself to previous levels, but with continual developments & close relationships with our suppliers, we're able to deliver a quality product at a reasonable market price.

We brought a number of functions in-house so we would deliver superior service.  Our greatest advance has been artwork management, preparation & creation for customers that require it.

Plus we expanded our Australian warehouse which allows a wider variety of products to be available more of the time.

And finally, we always have a bit of fun... brining you Weird Facts & making sure you have something to do in those quiet times with our Retro Games.

In closing, we thank you for a great year & we look forward to continually innovating in 2012.

The Bag People Team.

Study the Quotes you get

Our business is based on integrity & Ethical Trade.  The Corporate Responsibility section of our website shows who we are & how we work.

We do not waiver from these principles.

Our products are very popular & we sell a lot of bags, but we are never the cheapest.

Because we're not the cheapest, we loose a lot of orders based on price.

However, when the comparison quotes are analysed, we tend to have the better price.

The way it occurs is :
  1)  we receive the details required for the bags
  2)  we quote on the requirements as stated
  3)  our pricing is invariably more expensive than the competition

The hidden factor is usually found in the competitive quotes - whereby they have under-quoted on the specifications requested & as such they'll win the order because the quotes are not scrutinised closely to check comparability.

The result is that you, your business, your clients & customers are undersold on the quality that was expected.

Don't undersell your business - make sure the quotes you receive are based on like-for-like products.

When the playing field is level, you'll find out pricing is actually very competitive.

Be sure to Contact Bag People for your reusable bag needs.

==================================

When making comparisons, be sure to compare :
  --  fabric weights
--  fabric colour option - are they an additional cost?
--  plastic base board - included or additional?
--  handle stitching method - sewn to top seam only, or sewn all down the side
--  any additional print set-up charges
--  local taxes, duty or clearance fee's
  --  courier & delivery charges

Get the Conversation Started

Having excellent brand exposure does not always mean spending big dollars.

Exposure is all out getting people to talk about your product or service.

So, the question to ask yourself is "how do you get the conversation started?"

Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest & big companies use the simple ideas very well.

Here's a bag we produced for a new book.  The publisher used bags by Bag People to get the conversation moving on a new book release.

The bags were a gift-with-purchase to those that bought the book, then the conversation starts by someone asking "hey, where did you get that interesting bag?"

Conversation Started.

How can you start the conversation?

Contact Bag People to find out what we can do for your business.

Be Careful with your Brand

Eco-friendly Reusable Bags are a brilliant method of expanding brand awareness & getting your message to more potential customers, but you should take care in choosing who you get to look after your brand.

A lot of bag suppliers are driven by busy mums & fanatical environmentalists.  They're in the business for the right reasons, but are they the right people to do business with?

Be careful to check they have the track record of quality production & on time delivery for you to be comfortable that they'll do the right thing with your brand.

Price is a consideration & is not to be overlooked - make sure you're still getting good value for your money, but be sure to investigate a number of options before choosing your supplier.

Have a look through their website.  Pay attention to a couple of pages :
-- about us & their business practices
 -- corporate responsibility & commitment
-- supplier relations, particularly how they interact with their suppliers

There are a number of things you can find out with a simple phone call... does someone from their office answer the phone, or are you diverted to a voice mail recording?

Do these few simple things to make sure whoever you select to make your bags will do the right thing for you.

More Jute Options

3 new Jute fabric options are now available :

1) Basic

This bag is the cheapest way to get into a Jute Bag, it's made from sturdy Jute fabric with the added bonus of vegetable starch.  Adding the vegetable starch to the Jute fabric stiffens the fabric & assist the bag be self supporting (whereby it will stand-up on it's own); very handy at the shops with now need to hold it up to load your items in.

2) Premium

This has the same wonderful look & feel of Jute as the Basic version does, but the Jute fabric is laminated on the inside with a thin film of polypropylene.  This thin film has 2 advantages, first to stiffen the fabric so the bag is self supporting & also the lamination creates a moisture barrier to the fabric.  Which means if there is a small liquid spill or condensation build up with the items in the bag, the actual Jute fabric is protected by the lamination & the likelihood of the fabric becoming moist/wet is very minimal.

3) Luxury

All the features of the Premium Bag + the addition of the Black Contrast Handles & Gusset.  A wonderful way to enhance your brand.

All these bags are now in stock & can be printed & delivered within 2 weeks.

Contact Us to arrange your samples.

So, we moved to bigger premises which is just around the corner from our old place, but has a much better storage configuration.

Stay on Target

It was in February, 2009 that our Blog included a post about Keeping Your Core (http://blog.bagpeople.com/2009/02/keep-your-core.html).

Over the last 18 months we have seen a number of our competitors go out-of-business because they did not have a plan for their business, nor did they acknowledge & support their existing customers.

It is never good to see business close-down, however it does demonstrate the absolute need to maintain your focus & be sure to stay on track.

Diversification is great, but make sure you're not sacrificing too much else to try to do more.

Our focus is unchanged & our Company Mission is still in our mind every day.

"to be the supplier of choice for high quality Reusable Bags made from a variety of environmentally friendly materials".

Weird Fact

It is reported that plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to rot away.

If the Normans had used plastic bags in their invasions across Europe in 1066, archaeologists would still be digging them up today.

Think about it.

Tough Times. Keep Marketing.

Times are still tough... and will get tougher for everyone. There is no denying that everyone is facing uncertain times economically.

If you or your business have already committed to a "tread lightly on the earth" approach, then NOW is the time to reaffirm these commitments.

If you and your family have committed to buying organic produce, despite a slightly higher price, keep buying it. Naturally it is superior nutritionally, and it is only with increased demand that the price will balance out to be on par with conventionally grown produce.

If your family or business may have committed to green energy sources. Keep these programs going. Again, it is only with increased demand and momentum that energy companies can provide these services cost-effectively.

Business owners are now examining their business structures and all their operating costs very carefully. Unfortunately advertising and marketing budgets can suffer when the dollars are tight.

Now is a great time to examine some cost effective marketing you may not have considered before.

Of course, bags provide all kinds of businesses with an opportunity to market their brand and make a statement about their commitment to greening their operations.

Reusable bags can easily replace plastic bags for food and non-food retailers, educational institutions, and businesses exhibiting at trade shows. The wonderful thing about these "green bags" is that your customers do your marketing for you.

They literally carry a walking billboard around for your business.

You can get these bags walking around for as little as $0.85 per bag. Now compare that with other marketing efforts!

So, amongst all the doomsday rhetoric going on right now, it's time for us to challenge our comfortable, familiar ways.

Go on, try something different. Going green will open up many opportunities for us all.

Make sure you Contact Bag People to find out more.

More Suppliers. More Choices

There are virtually thousands of companies you can buy bags from & there are more companies popping up all the time.

When making a decision about which company to choose as your bag supplier, do you make the decision on price only - or are there other factors that you consider?

Look at the Product
-- Will the product stand the tests that you & your customers will put it through?
-- What kind of fabric is it made from? Will it last?
-- How is it made? What is the sewing like & what about the overall design?

Look at the Supplier
-- How long have they been in business?
-- What are their responses like?
-- Do they answer the phone?
-- Are queries answered promptly, or do you always wait until tomorrow to hear back?

Look at the Factory they use
-- What are conditions like for the people that actually make the bags? Are their conditions adequate?
-- Has the Supplier ever visited the Factory to see what it's like?

Look at Delivery
-- it's not always about speed of delivery (sometimes it is)
-- what is information & communication like?
-- do things happen when you have been told they will?

Although bags are a simple product, there's a lot of complexity behind the scenes.

If you take a longer/deeper look at the overall product & process you'll surprised at some of the responses.

Check for yourself.

Good, Quick & Cheap

Is the cheapest price always the best value?

In the bag business the cheapest price usually wins the order, this is unfortunate because it leads to the wrong products being supplied and worse still, very poor quality products that do not last as long as they should.

Here's the formula for deciding what's important to you when choosing your bag supplier.

You fill in the blanks with. Good. Cheap. Quick.

I want bags that are _______ and _______, but not _______.

There will be 3 outcomes :
:: Good and Quick, but not Cheap.
:: Cheap and Good, but not Quick.
:: Quick and Cheap, but not Good.

At Bag People, we've found that customer never ask product products that are "not good", but we're always asked for cheap.

We can do cheap products, but we need a bit of time for delivery (usually about 8-10 weeks).

Other than than, we can fill all of your needs.

Quality is one of our Cornerstones and as such we won't sell you short. Don't damage your brand with bags of inferior quality.

Ask yourself "what is the cost?

Contact Us to find out more.

A Reward in the Bag

Customers who bring their own bags for shopping usually have a little more spring in their step because they know they're doing their bit to minimize consumption.

If you're a business owner. How can you make your business a more attractive & rewarding experience for your customers?

Give those customers that bring their own bags something to show for it - maybe a discount off their purchase or maybe another Apple or Orange in their bag for the journey?

There is no hiding the fact that multi-use reusable bags are more expensive than single-use plastic.

However, the additional cost of the bag could be off-set many times over by the repeat business your customers will give you.

What are your strategies to attract & keep customers?

It's Your Business

No one knows your business better that you do.

Your business is an individual living thing; your breathe life into it everyday. It is as individual as you are.

So... if businesses are individual, why do suppliers try to feed the same products to one-and-all?

If you're an individual, you should get something specifically made for your needs?

Talk to Bag People to see what can be done to make sure your business stands out.

You don't need to take the same as everyone else just becuase that's what the supplier has in their warehouse or perhaps it's the line that the sales rep makes the most commission on.

Get what YOU need & get it from Bag People.

Find me a Rock - Get Your Brief Right

Our post from last month (11th April - Get the most from your Bags) has created a lot of interest.

Some of our customers are even asking "what does it means?"

Put simply, it means that you need to make sure you've got all your information & data in place before going out & getting anything done.

We have a phrase in our office. "This one's playing 'Find me a Rock'.", it's a term we use when customers might not have completely formulated their thoughts & ideas.

Basically - they've got no idea.

Just take a moment to think about a rock. Have you considered the almost infinite variety of rocks... the mind boggles.

- size (dimensions)
- shape
- colour
- texture
- weight
- composition - what's it made from?

The amount of possible combinations is astounding & would most certainly be over-whelming if you tried to compare every-single-possible-option.

This is where is pays to narrow your focus. Have a ready through our previous post & then have a think about which way you'd like to go with your bags.

We can certainly help with the process & will most likely have a few ideas you may not have thought of.

After all we are Your Promotional Bag Specialists.

Price Talk - Cotton

Not too long ago cotton prices had been declining. This was directly linked to the increased popularity of other fibres (some artificial) particularly in the fashion clothing industry.

Because of declining demand cotton became less & less profitable, hence many farmers turned to different, more profitable crops (mostly grains).

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This year cotton farmers around the world will harvest the lowest acreage in more than two decades.

The only problem is, the farmers cut back exactly when global demand started rising.

In addition, China which grows the most cotton, has undergone a significant drought/flood cycle, & India had major floods just before the last harvest.

So reduced cotton planting combined with a very poor harvest over 2 years has significantly reduced supply & global trends have significantly increased demand.

The result being that cotton prices have more than doubled the past 16 months. It is hoped that prices will reduce by the end of 2011 but with such uncertain climatic events occurring, as well as some anticipated profiteering from growers & mills alike... so don't hold your breath.

For the first time since we can remember, high performance synthetics such as lightweight polyester are actually cheaper than cotton.

The graph shows Price per Pound (lb) of Cotton in
US Dollars from January 2009 to March 2011.

Fairtrade Cotton

The Fairtrade Certified Cotton label on a product guarantees that the Cotton growers in developing countries receive a fair minimum price & a premium to invest in social & environmental development initiatives to benefit their communities.

Bag People have entered the movement with our Cotton Bags to ensure sustainability of supply, high quality products & fair reward for growers.

Our bags made from Fairtrade Certified Cotton already carry the Fairtrade label - which is sewn into the side seam of every bag - this means our products & procedures have been scrutinised & audited to meet the strict policies of the Fairtrade Organisation.

So what?

Well, this is another step to our company living up to our Mission, plus we believe there is a definite obligation for developed countries to assist the developing.

Phenomenal Print

At Bag People we push the boundary on everything!

Nothing is too big or small for us to have a look at... and if we think we can add value or do a really good job, then we'll take it on.

Kobie Bosch came to us requesting that we re- create an original piece of her artwork on a Canvas Bag - so we looked at it.

The results speak for themselves - see below.

If you don't believe it, Contact Us for more info... better still - contact Kobie directly & she'll let you know herself.

What's your dream?

Let us know.
